What makes a perfect companion to your natural ecosystem pond? Why, gorgeous pond fish, of course! Introducing pond fish into your pond is a lovely way to add a little more life to view. At Modern Design Aquascaping, we are positive that you will absolutely love watching and caring for your aquatic pets. However, when it's time to choose your fish, you want to be sure you're getting healthy ones. Here are some tips to ensure a better experience every time you step into the shop.

Is the store clean?
You want to purchase fish from a store that's kept clean and tidy. A messy shop indicates a retailer who is careless with their fish.

Are there any dead fish in the water?
Even just one dead fish floating in a single tank is a problem. If you see this, walk out and get your fish elsewhere. You don't want to risk buying fish from diseased tanks.

What is the shop's quarantine policy?
Every fish that comes into the shop should be quarantined for 14 to 21 days at minimum and given salt treatments to make sure those fish do not carry any disease or harbor parasites.

Are the employees knowledgeable?
Your pond is an investment and you want experts on your side. Wherever you choose to purchase your fish, do so from a merchant which employs knowledgeable, friendly and helpful as you select your pond inhabitants.

How is the water changed and tested?
The water should be regularly tested for ammonia, proper pH levels, nitrites and nitrates. Routine testing lets the retailer know when to change out the water.

Are there any sick fish hanging around?
Sick fish are never a good sign. Look around for any fish that are alone with clamped fins, as they are likely ill.

What about parasites?
The best way to test fish for the presence of parasites is with a microscope, so retailers can treat the fish before selling any of them. Ask how the shop inspects for and treats parasites.

Ask about net sharing?
Do the employees use a different net for each tank? In the interest of avoiding the spread of disease, they should never share nets for multiple tanks.

How is the skin of the fish?
Always pay attention to fish skin. You do not want to see missing scales, sores, or broken and missing fins--all signs of bacterial infection or parasites.
