Did you know that Modern Design Aquascaping is a proud supporter of The Aquascape Foundation? The Aquascape Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation of sustainable solutions for the global water crisis. Through environmental, educational and philanthropic efforts, The Foundation promotes awareness of the fact that water is our most precious resource.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 884 million people lack even a basic drinking-water service. In fact, 1 in 10 people across the globe lack access to safe and clean water. Why is clean water so important? Safe and clean water is a fundamental to life. Everyone on this planet needs at least 5 to 13 liters of water daily for drinking, cooking, and maintaining healthy hygiene. Polluted water is a global and deadly epidemic. Nearly 2 million people die each year from diarrhea-related diseases such as cholera. Millions more become seriously ill from other water-related ailments which are mostly preventable. When we say that a community is “water-poor”, we mean that the people lack adequate access to safe water, but these communities suffer in numerous other ways. They tend to be economically poor, their children cannot benefit from education due to frequent illness, and adults routinely miss opportunities to improve their financial circumstances as well. Treating rampant illness and attempting to acquire water when it is not readily available is a time-consuming process in which women and children often bear the the burden. When you think of clean water, you might only think about that water which is safe to be used for hydration and the production of food. But sanitation and hygiene is just as important, and clean water is most certainly necessary to both prevent disease and preserve basic human dignity.
